On December 11, 2024, the Research and Education for Environmental Foundation (REEF) participated in an event organized by SWAWSA at Madras Christian College (MCC), Tambaram.
The REEF team, led by Program Director Vinoth A. and Secretary Jegastar, conducted a field visit to the Pichavaram Mangrove Forest on 30/09/2024. The objectives included surveying potential mangrove plantation sites, engaging with local communities, and assessing the feasibility of ecotourism in the area.
At REEF, we recognize the critical role that public awareness and education play in marine conservation. Our Public Awareness and Education Campaign, launched on July 10, 2024, is focused on educating local communities, students, and the general public about the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. We aim to create a more responsible society that actively participates in conservation efforts.
At REEF, protecting marine species is one of our top priorities. Through our Marine Species Protection Program, launched on July 20, 2024, we aim to conserve endangered species, protect marine habitats, and foster biodiversity in coastal ecosystems. By collaborating with government bodies and marine biologists, we have been working to safeguard species that are critical to the health of our oceans.
We believe in promoting sustainable tourism that supports the conservation of natural ecosystems. This service had launched on August 15, 2024, aims to create environmentally responsible tourism opportunities that allow visitors to appreciate coastal and marine ecosystems. Through this program, we are combining conservation efforts by making eco-tourism a tool for both protection and livelihood.
At REEF, we are committed to preserving the health and beauty of our coastal ecosystems through regular beach cleanup initiatives. Our latest cleanup event, held on August 15, 2024, was a huge success, thanks to the active participation of volunteers, local communities, and environmental enthusiasts.
Mangroves are a vital part of coastal ecosystems, protecting shorelines from erosion, providing habitat for marine life, and acting as natural carbon sinks. At REEF, we have been actively involved in restoring degraded mangrove ecosystems, with our latest Mangrove Restoration Project initiated on June 10, 2024, along the coast location.
On 12th October 2024, Fisheries Technocrats Forum (FTF) held its monthly meeting at the Commissionerate of Fisheries, Nandanam, Chennai. The event was attended by esteemed members of the foundation and special international guests: Dr. Maarten Bavinck and Dr. Wulffraat from The Netherlands.
