National Workshop on Sea Turtle Nesting Phenology and Conservation in Pulicat ( NWSTNP-2025)

Pulicat, Tamil Nadu

1. Introduction

The National Workshop on Sea Turtle Nesting Phenology and Conservation, organized by the Research and Education for Environmental Foundation (REEF), was successfully conducted at Pulicat, Tamil Nadu. The workshop aimed to bring together scientists, conservationists, students, and NGOs to exchange knowledge and discuss strategies for sea turtle conservation and marine biodiversity protection.
This two-day event featured:

โœ… Interactive discussions on conservation strategies
โœ… Keynote speeches by leading researchers
โœ… Competitions to engage young minds
โœ… A boating trip and field visit to nesting sites
โœ… A turtle walk for hands-on conservation experience
โœ… Community engagement activities

The workshop strengthened participants' understanding of turtle nesting behaviors, climate change impacts, and conservation techniques, reinforcing their commitment to environmental sustainability.

A total of 32 participants attended the workshop, representing universities, colleges, NGOs, and research institutions from across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

3. Day 1: Workshop Sessions & Activities

Inauguration & Welcome Address The workshop commenced with the Lighting of the Lamp by Founder of REEF Mr.M.Sivanesan and followed by Secretary Mr.D.Jegastar, symbolizing the spread of knowledge.
Mr. Vinoth A, Treasurer of REEF, delivered the Welcome Address, emphasizing:

6. Boating & Nesting Site Visit

๐Ÿšค After the competitions, participants took a boating trip to the Pulicat Estuarine Biological Research Centre (MCC-PEBRC) to learn about:
โœ… Ongoing research on Pulicatโ€™s estuarine biodiversity
โœ… Conservation efforts for marine species in the region
๐ŸŒŠ Following the visit, the group proceeded to Pulicat Beach to observe sea turtle nesting activity. Highlights included:

โœ… Discussion on habitat conditions for nesting turtles
โœ… Understanding the role of estuarine ecosystems in conservation

7. Evening Activities: Campfire & Turtle Walk
