VISION

To emerge as a pioneering centre of excellence in coastal and marine conservation that harmoniously integrates scientific research, community empowerment, and environmental education for the sustainable protection of fragile ecosystems and the resilience of coastal communities. REEF envisions a future where Pulicat and similar coastal landscapes function as living models of ecological balance, participatory governance, and climate-resilient development, where traditional knowledge and modern science work together to safeguard biodiversity and sustain livelihoods for generations to come.

MISSION

The mission of the Research and Education for Environmental Foundation (REEF) is to promote holistic environmental stewardship through an integrated approach that combines research, education, and community engagement. REEF is committed to: • Conducting applied scientific research on coastal and marine ecosystems to support evidence-based conservation and sustainable management practices. • Strengthening the capacity of fisherfolk and coastal stakeholders through training, awareness, and skill development programmes that enhance ecological understanding and livelihood security. • Preserving and documenting traditional ecological knowledge and integrating it with contemporary conservation strategies. • Promoting environmental education at all levels by fostering nature-based learning, field exposure, and interdisciplinary collaboration. • Facilitating participatory coastal governance by encouraging active involvement of local communities in decision-making and resource management processes. • Establishing Pulicat as a centre for coastal research, innovation, and sustainable development through institutional networking and strategic partnerships. • Advocating for climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration, and biodiversity conservation to ensure long-term environmental sustainability.
