Ongoing Research
REEF is advancing applied research and field-ready solutions for coastal resilience, pollution upcycling, and shore monitoring. Below are our flagship projects currently in pilot and deployment stages.
REEF Sentinel Integrated Environmental Monitoring Suite
An integrated sensor network and cloud analytics platform for continuous monitoring of water quality, air-climate variables, and ecological indicators. REEF Sentinel makes robust environmental data accessible to researchers, managers, and citizens.
Objectives
- Deliver reliable multi-parameter data streams across coastal sites.
- Support research, aquaculture management, and policy compliance.
- Maintain open-data principles and standardized metadata.
Methods & Tech
Modular sensor nodes (water + climate), cloud ingestion, time-series database, threshold alerting, and GIS overlays for spatial analysis.
Current Status
Operational network at 6 sites; API and dashboard beta released to partner institutions.
ShoreGuard AI Intelligent Shoreline Defense Platform
AI-driven shore monitoring and defense support system to augment coastal safety and response capabilities. Combines satellite data, drone imagery, in-situ sensors, and machine learning for automated threat detection and prioritised recommendations.
Objectives
- Automate detection of shoreline hazards and anthropogenic threats.
- Provide prioritized, actionable intelligence to government agencies.
- Respect privacy and operate within civil-use governance frameworks.
Methods & Tech
Multi-source data fusion (satellite + UAV + sensor), convolutional neural nets for image interpretation, change-detection algorithms, and secure reporting pipelines to government dashboards.
Current Status
Algorithm prototypes validated against historical events; pilot partnership discussions ongoing with state coastal authorities.
